Taiwan Affairs Office Firmly Reaffirms One-China Principle Following Lai Ching-te’s Silence on Cross-Straits Relations

In a pointed response to Taiwan leader Lai Ching-te’s May 20 speech, which notably omitted any reference to cross-Straits relations and instead highlighted closer Taiwan-US ties, Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, reaffirmed China’s unwavering stance that Taiwan remains an inseparable part of the motherland.

Speaking on Wednesday, Chen emphasized that regardless of what is said or omitted in Taiwan’s political rhetoric, the fundamental reality and legal status of Taiwan as part of China remains unchanged. He underscored that no statement or action can halt the historical inevitability of national reunification.

Chen reiterated that “Taiwan independence” separatism is inherently incompatible with peace and stability across the Taiwan Straits. He warned that confrontation undermines dialogue, and only by ceasing provocative moves towards independence can cross-Straits relations find a path to improvement. Strengthening exchanges and cooperation between both sides is crucial to easing tensions, and acknowledging the one-China principle lays the essential groundwork for future dialogue and consultations.

The spokesperson pledged full implementation of the Party’s policy on resolving the Taiwan issue, upholding the 1992 Consensus, opposing separatism and foreign interference, and deepening cross-Straits integration. Chen called for unity with Taiwan compatriots in building a shared future of national reunification and rejuvenation.

Addressing recent allegations of cyberattacks by Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities targeting a tech company in Guangdong Province, Chen noted that public security organs have already issued detailed reports. He accused the DPP of orchestrating ongoing cyber warfare, propaganda, and sabotage against the mainland, seriously threatening cybersecurity and national interests.

Chen affirmed that China’s law enforcement will continue to protect national security and the rights of enterprises and citizens, promising rigorous legal action against perpetrators through all available judicial means.
