Instagram is aiming to merge social interaction and content consumption into a single, seamless experience. The company has begun testing a Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality that will allow users to continue watching Reels even after they’ve switched to another application to reply to a message.
This new feature directly targets the common interruption where a user has to pause a video to engage in a conversation. With PiP, the Reel transitions to a small, floating player that remains on-screen, allowing the user to chat, browse, or perform other tasks without losing their place in the video. The goal is to make the platform feel more integrated with the user’s natural communication patterns.
This update reflects a broader trend in social media of breaking down the barriers between different app functions. By allowing video to persist outside of the main feed, Instagram is acknowledging that users are constantly juggling communication and entertainment. For creators, this is excellent news, as their content is less likely to be abandoned mid-watch.
In addition to this multitasking upgrade, Instagram is also improving its large-screen experience with the release of a native iPad app. This provides a clean, optimized layout for tablet viewing, enhancing everything from photo browsing to video watching. Both updates are geared towards making the platform more versatile and user-friendly.
