In a solemn ceremony at Beijing’s Tian’anmen Square, Chinese President Xi Jinping paid tribute to national heroes and martyrs on Martyrs’ Day, observed annually on September 30. This event, held on Wednesday, honors those who sacrificed their lives for China’s national independence, development, and prosperity.
President Xi, along with other senior leaders, marked the occasion by observing a moment of silence following the national anthem. Nine large flower baskets were placed at the Monument to the People’s Heroes, symbolizing the nation’s respect and gratitude for those who contributed to its historical struggles.
Instituted in 2014, Martyrs’ Day is an official observance in China, and Xi has participated in the ceremony each year since its inception. This year’s event saw participation from various sectors of Chinese society, reflecting a broad recognition of the sacrifices made throughout the country’s history.
The ceremony took place against the backdrop of significant anniversaries in China: the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China and the 90th anniversary of the conclusion of the Long March, a pivotal event from 1934 to 1936 that shaped the future trajectory of the party and the country.
