China and the European Union have committed to enhancing their collaborative efforts in tackling climate change, biodiversity conservation, and plastic pollution. This commitment comes as both parties emphasize the need to address pressing global environmental challenges.
The announcement was made by China’s Minister of Ecology and Environment, Huang Runqiu, during a meeting with Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, at the 17th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP17) held in Yerevan, Armenia. The discussions underscored the importance of the China-EU High-Level Environment and Climate Dialogue, focusing on global biodiversity protection and international negotiations to curb plastic pollution.
Huang highlighted the longstanding constructive cooperation between China and the EU on environmental protection and climate initiatives. He stressed the necessity of maintaining open communication, executing existing agreements, and prioritizing shared goals through international collaboration. A significant aspect of their dialogue involved the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which aims to have at least 30 percent of degraded ecosystems under restoration by 2030.
Both sides expressed their aspirations for fruitful outcomes at the upcoming COP17 and COP31 conferences. Huang expressed optimism that collaborative efforts between China and the EU would contribute positively to global environmental governance. Ribera, in turn, acknowledged China’s efforts in environmental protection and climate negotiations, voicing her support for continued dialogue and closer cooperation in these areas.
This renewed commitment from China and the EU underscores the critical role of their partnership in advancing international agreements and fostering a sustainable future. Their joint efforts aim to drive significant progress in global environmental policies and reinforce the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges.
