China Boosts Gold Reserves for 23rd Consecutive Month Amid Global Uncertainty

China’s central bank has extended its gold buying streak to 23 consecutive months, signaling a continued strategy to bolster its reserves amidst global financial and geopolitical uncertainties. In September, the People’s Bank of China increased its gold holdings to 77.47 million ounces, up from 76.73 million ounces in August, adding approximately 740,000 ounces during the month.

Despite global fluctuations in gold prices, analysts suggest that China’s persistent gold acquisitions are aimed at diversifying its reserves and providing a safeguard against international financial and geopolitical risks. Traditionally seen as a hedge against inflation, gold’s role in central bank reserves is increasingly tied to risk management.

This ongoing effort to augment gold holdings is also perceived as a move to enhance the credibility of China’s currency, the yuan, and to lay the groundwork for its gradual internationalisation. The central bank’s strategy to continue adding gold is part of a broader reserve management approach.

While China’s gold reserves have seen an increase, its foreign exchange reserves experienced a decline. At the end of September, these reserves stood at $3.4003 trillion, marking a decrease of $38.1 billion, or 1.11%, from the previous month. This downturn was attributed to changes in exchange rates and movements in global financial asset prices, reflecting shifts in the global economic environment and monetary policies.

Chinese authorities remain confident that the country’s stable economic conditions will provide a solid foundation for maintaining overall stability in its foreign exchange reserves, despite the recent decline.
