In a recent development concerning Taiwan’s defense capabilities, two F-16V Block 70 fighter jets, part of a larger purchase from the United States, made an unexpected return to Hawaii shortly after their takeoff. These aircraft, identified by serial numbers 6727 and 6728, had initially departed from Hickam Field in Hawaii. However, the reason for their return to the departure point remains unclear, raising questions about potential delays in their intended delivery schedule.
Taiwan has invested in a total of 66 F-16 C/D Block 70 aircraft, which are slated to be stationed at Chihhang Air Base in Taitung County. These jets will be operated by the Air Force’s 7th Tactical Fighter Wing, with the goal of bolstering the defense of Taiwan’s eastern region. The acquisition of these advanced fighter jets forms a crucial part of Taiwan’s strategy to enhance its military capabilities amidst regional tensions.
The planned route for the jets included a flight from Hawaii to Guam, where they would refuel and resupply before proceeding to Taiwan. The stretch from Hawaii to Guam is estimated to take approximately eight hours and 20 minutes, followed by a journey from Guam to Taiwan lasting about four hours and 40 minutes. The first of these aircraft was anticipated to arrive in Taiwan within the current week, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing procurement process.
Originally, the delivery of these fighter jets was scheduled for 2023. However, it faced setbacks due to the relocation and restart of the production line, coupled with supply-chain disruptions. Despite these challenges, the remaining aircraft are expected to be delivered by 2027 and 2028, underscoring a long-term commitment to augmenting Taiwan’s defense infrastructure.
