Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has issued a stern rebuke to China following its test of a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) over the Pacific Ocean. Albanese emphasized that such actions pose a threat to regional peace and stability, highlighting the potential devastation if the missile, launched from a nuclear-powered submarine with a dummy warhead, were equipped with a nuclear payload. He asserted that the region requires fewer nuclear weapons, not an increase, and pledged that Australia would persist in voicing its concerns to Beijing.
During his visit to the Solomon Islands, Albanese described the missile test as a provocative action that could exacerbate instability throughout the Pacific. His sentiments were echoed by Solomon Islands Prime Minister Matthew Wale, who also condemned the launch. Wale called on all major powers, including China and the United States, to refrain from conducting missile tests in the Pacific region, urging them instead to focus on building partnerships with Pacific nations rather than creating security threats.
China, however, defended its missile launch, labeling it a routine military exercise conducted in compliance with international law. Beijing insisted that nearby countries were informed in advance and maintained that the test was not targeted at any specific nation. Despite these assurances, Australian officials dismissed China’s explanation, arguing that the notice provided before the launch was inadequate and that the test did not adhere to accepted international standards for ballistic missile notifications.
The missile test has sparked criticism from several countries, raising concerns that the increasing military activity in the Indo-Pacific could heighten regional tensions and potentially trigger a new phase of strategic competition.
