China is set to broaden its import portfolio to include advanced technology, essential industrial components, energy resources, and high-quality agricultural products as part of its 15th Five-Year Plan spanning from 2026 to 2030. This strategic move, announced by the General Administration of Customs, aims to bolster industrial modernization, stimulate domestic consumption, and provide Chinese consumers with a wider array of premium products sourced globally. In line with this, China intends to diversify the countries from which it imports.
Notably, the first half of the year saw both imports and exports in China achieve double-digit growth, with imports growing at a faster pace than exports. This surge is attributed to rising domestic demand for advanced equipment, technology, and consumer goods, reflecting the country’s evolving economic landscape. The initiative to expand imports is expected to further support the country’s economic goals by enhancing market access for foreign agricultural and food products, while also simplifying quarantine and import approval processes.
Since the beginning of the year, China has granted market access to 264 categories of agricultural and food products from 79 new countries, expanding its sourcing network to over 150 countries and regions. This expansion underscores China’s commitment to greater market openness and diversified trade, as emphasized by Chinese experts. They assert that increasing imports will not only meet the demands for industrial upgrading and higher-quality consumer goods but also create fresh opportunities for international exporters.
As China continues to open its markets, it anticipates that its burgeoning consumer base will create significant opportunities for global businesses. The country’s strategy reflects a dedication to stronger global economic cooperation and showcases its role as a key player in the international trade arena. Chinese officials believe that these efforts will facilitate the nation’s transition toward a more open market economy, benefiting both domestic consumers and international trade partners.
