Nine automakers, including Tesla, are set to recall approximately 4.3 million vehicles in China due to concerns over the accessibility and operation of concealed or emergency door-release handles during situations like accidents or electrical failures. Tesla leads the recall campaign, affecting around 2.98 million of its Model 3, Model Y, Model S, and Model X vehicles, both imported and manufactured in China. The recall process is set to commence on September 25.
These vehicles are slated to receive a range of corrective measures, which could include the addition of warning labels, enhanced markings, or updates delivered through over-the-air software. Regulators have expressed worry that the mechanical emergency door-release handles might be challenging to locate following a serious collision, potentially impeding occupants’ ability to exit or rescuers’ efforts to enter the vehicles.
Aside from Tesla, other significant recalls involve roughly 390,000 vehicles from Xiaomi, 371,000 from Leapmotor, and 264,000 from Xpeng. Each of these companies is addressing similar safety concerns that have prompted this widespread recall initiative.
This move comes as China intensifies its vehicle safety regulations, reflecting a growing emphasis on ensuring passenger safety during emergencies. Notably, the country plans to prohibit the use of concealed door handles starting in 2027, underscoring its commitment to enhancing safety standards in the automotive industry.
