A looming November 10 deadline is adding significant urgency to the recently confirmed meeting between President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which is expected at the APEC summit in South Korea.
On that date, a 90-day truce that has paused the escalating trade war is set to expire. This truce has held off duties that threatened to reach 145% and has calmed fears of a global slowdown.
Ahead of this critical meeting, Trump has made a new admission: the high tariffs are “not sustainable.” He immediately blamed China, claiming “they forced me to do that.”
This sets the stage for a tense negotiation. Trump has expressed a desire for a “fair deal” and said, “I think we’re going to be fine,” but he also remains wary, noting “China is always looking for an edge.”
Just last week, Trump had threatened to cancel the meeting, highlighting the volatile nature of the talks as the deadline approaches.
