India has underscored the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along its border with China as a crucial factor for fostering and developing bilateral relations. This emphasis came during a meeting between India’s National Security Adviser, Ajit Doval, and China’s Foreign Minister, Wang Yi, held in Beijing. The gathering marked the 25th round of discussions between the two nations’ special representatives, centered on resolving their longstanding boundary dispute. Key topics included advancing boundary delimitation, enhancing border management, and broadening cooperation across the frontier.
In the discussions, both countries positively assessed the progress made in their bilateral relations and explored strategies to maintain stability along the Line of Actual Control. Both nations reiterated their commitment to achieving a political settlement of the boundary issue, guided by their long-term interests. This dialogue follows the progress seen after the 2024 understanding between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, which aimed to alleviate tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since then, initiatives such as people-to-people exchanges, the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and designated border trade routes have resumed.
Ajit Doval remarked that bilateral ties with China have been gradually normalizing, attributing this improvement directly to the sustained peace along the border. Meanwhile, China emphasized that the boundary issue should be appropriately contextualized within the broader spectrum of the bilateral relationship. Despite the constructive tone of the talks, neither side disclosed substantial details regarding the demarcation of the disputed boundary. Nevertheless, both countries agreed to persist with negotiations, planning the next round of special representative talks in India in 2027.
This dialogue is particularly significant as it precedes the anticipated visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit scheduled for September. The upcoming summit adds urgency to the efforts aimed at further stabilizing bilateral relations, highlighting the need for continued diplomatic engagement and cooperation between the two nations.
