In a significant policy shift aimed at bolstering national security and reducing reliance on foreign supply chains, the United States has unveiled tariffs of up to 100% on certain drone imports. The focus is primarily on larger unmanned aircraft systems, particularly those exceeding 25 kilograms and equipped with national security-related features such as thermal cameras and docking stations. These specific products will be subjected to the maximum 100% tariff, whereas smaller drones will incur a 25% tariff.
Additionally, the U.S. government will extend tariffs to drone imports and components from several key trading partners. Products originating from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will face a 15% tariff. Meanwhile, imports from the United Kingdom will be affected by a 10% tariff, contingent on the hardware, software, and technology being sourced from these nations or the U.S. The majority of these tariffs are set to be implemented starting September 3.
The White House has stated that these measures are designed to fortify the U.S. defense and industrial base, promote domestic drone manufacturing, and generate American jobs. This initiative is also seen as a strategy to minimize dependency on foreign suppliers, particularly given China’s dominant role in the global drone market. Shenzhen-based DJI, a leading player in this sector, commands a substantial portion of the U.S. commercial drone market and has previously faced U.S. restrictions due to national security concerns.
U.S. officials have raised alarms about the potential risks posed by foreign-made drones, including issues related to surveillance, data collection, and potential threats. In line with these concerns, the U.S. Federal Communications Commission has advocated for increased domestic production to mitigate such risks. This move is part of the broader ongoing trade and technology tensions between Washington and Beijing. In a reciprocal gesture, China has imposed its own restrictions on drone exports to the U.S. and taken actions against several American companies.
